Nautical Publications

for planning where the journey will end...and so much more.

US Chart 1

from NOAA's Office of Coast Survey

Chart 1 is the root of it all.
It contains every symbol used on a nautical chart, They are the features waiting for connection....

the symbols that have more to say.

Coast Pilot

from NOAA's Office of Coast Survey

The Coast Pilot is just that...
your personal knowledge base of the coast. Imparting its wisdom in rich text...

to guide you safely in.

Notice to Mariners

from the US Coast Guard

Attention all mariners...
These notices make sure you are adjusting with the tide. Nothing is static in the marine world...

keep up with all the changes.

US Chart 1

symbols.....they stand for something

the Vision

Nautical Charts contain lots of symbols....
how to understand all it is they have to say?

Always looking for answers, looking at the symbols before me and wondering where they fit in the big picture. How do they help in the navigation of unknown passages or those out of our comfort zone?

I aim to bring the symbols into a place they can aid in learning, understanding and connecting.

  • aid in learning how to read the chart
  • helps with building an ontology of terms used for nautical navigation
  • link other sources of data
  • stay open to uses for the symbols in other domains

Coast Pilot

Tell me what's out there....
Guide me safely to where it is i want to be.

the Direction

We all need a guide at some point.

....pointing out things we might not be aware of. But sometimes, it feels like such a burden to sort through all those things. It feels like too much to absorb.

I'm just trying to help you get what you want...when you want it.

  • creating new filtering techniques, starting with the iCPilot proto-type
  • setting standards on building new useful data models
  • connecting the Coast Pilot with open linked data
  • using it for guidance in alternative ways
  • parsing what's given to strip out what is truly needed
  • using it as a testbed for other domains
  • intelligently querying for information
  • utilizing modern data models to discover links within the data that may have been missed otherwise

Notice to Mariners

planning to give more of your attention

the Gist

Noticing the obvious....

Like how inaccessible the current format is, How there is much to impart but no obvious way to get the pieces we need most.

Sometimes the hardest things to notice are the ones that need to be noticed the most....I notice. (You can notice too starting with ChUM)

  • creating a new data structure to allow for more uses
  • setting standards on how to build it
  • connections to other marine related data as well as linked open data in other domains
  • testing how to deal with all the notices, not just critical chart corrections
  • creating innovative interfaces that get noticed.
